Look Beyond The Paint

When you're looking for a new home, most people have a tendency to want a house that's already perfect. No one wants to look at Burlington, Ontario homes for sale when they want to live in St. Catherine's or face the prospect of major renovations just to get the house looking the way they would like. The problem with this attitude is that perfect houses don't exist. So what can you do? Look beyond the paint.

Looking beyond the paint simply means that when you're touring Oakville real estate you should look beyond what the house is to what it could be. You want to see its potential, not its reality. In reality, the paint will probably be the wrong color and there won't be enough closet space or the countertop is too high in the kitchen. Focusing on these flaws can lead you to reject the house outright when other parts about it may have made it suitable.

Flaws that are especially inconsequential in a piece of Vaughan real estate are decor related. Walls can easily be painted over. Doors can easily be replaced. Pictures can be taken down, flooring can be ripped up, and cupboards can be refinished, all with a minimum of expense and effort. Other flaws, such as an outdated kitchen, not enough closet or bathroom space, and an unfinished basement are more serious but still fixable if you're saving money on the house that can be put into renovations.

That's the major reason why you should bother to try and give imperfect real estate in London a fighting chance - because you can save money. Think about it: if you're immediately turned off by the black and yellow striped wallpaper or the oven from the 1970s, what do you think other buyers are thinking? They're thinking they're not going to put in an offer, which gives you the chance to swoop in and scoop up the property at a discount.

It takes a bit of imagination to look beyond the surface when you're just looking at a real estate listing in Toronto or even at the house itself, but you owe it to yourself to try. Stand in a room and close your eyes. Mentally repaint the walls a color you like. Take out the furniture the owners have in it and replace it with your own. Change the flooring. Knock out a wall. And then see what you think. It makes a big difference.
